THE NEW LAND ROVER DEFENDER EXPEDITION 001: FROM THE CENTER OF THE EARTH TO ITS WORLD PREMIERE AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW.... The New Land Rover Defender begins first overland expedition in the remote Valley of the Castles on the Kazakhstan / China border
Global debut: The New Land Rover Defender will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show, at 4:00 AM EDT (09:00 BST/10:00 CEST) on Tuesday, September 10
First glimpse: The New Defender tackles remote Valley of the Castles, Kazakhstan, on its first expedition en route to Frankfurt, Germany
So here’s my 2p on the new Land Rover Defender. Working surrounded by lovely vehicles on a daily basis, I can honestly say I haven’t been this excited for a new car in a long time! To get this out the way: the Classic Defender is a 4-decade old design that just doesn’t work in the 21st Century.
I absolutely adore the Classic for what it is, and I will forever smile when I see a nice one on the road, but to design a successor based on vastly out-dated technology would have been commercial suicide. No-one has taken the Classic away, you can still go and buy one! (I have a few for sale, in fact!)
Right, on to the new...I think the new chassis looks seriously impressive, and I can’t imagine Land Rover would let it be anything else, given the sheer amount of hours that have gone in to testing. I’m most excited to see the interior with the exposed structural elements and all of the quirky design features, and some of the technology that outshines even the highest spec Range Rovers. I think the outside is a very modest nod to its ancestor, and a lot of cool parts and features have been cleverly integrated and very thoroughly thought through. I really like that they’ve thought of a style to suit (almost) every taste, and that 18” steels can be chosen alongside your cloth interior, or you can go with something a bit more ‘Urban’ with some fashionable 20” wheels and plush Windsor Leather.
TLDR; hats off to you, landrover. I can’t wait to see one in person, have a go and get to work!
