“I am my ancestors’ wildest dream.” •

I had such a lovely time in Washington D.C. this past week. I grew up outside this city and still have a fondness for it even after moving away when I was a young teen. Visiting the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture was such a special moment for me. As a child, all of our school field trips were in D.C. and I have probably been to every museum at least 2 times. This weekend I thought about how transformative it would have been if this museum existed when I was a young girl. I grew up in a predominantly White community in northern Virginia and as I walked around the museum, I thought about what it would have meant to see the history of my ancestors and the beauty of my culture in a museum. I was stripped of the history of African Americans in my schools’ history books. In fact, we ALL suffered the consequences by not fully being educated on the history of Black people in America. It’s not just African American history, it’s American history. There would be no America as it is today without the countless contributions and incomprehensible suffering that my ancestors endured for 400 years. The joy, pride, sorrow I felt to see the history I share with millions of other African Americans in this country so beautifully on display, was more than I could have imagined. In a city that was literally built on the backs of African Americans, this museum is beyond overdue. I am so indebted to my ancestors for their incredible strength. They endured the horrors of slavery and Jim Crow and overcame the odds so that I could be here today...thriving. And even now, there is still so much work to do. I’m so thankful for them. I am so grateful for and proud of my history. Black people are so dope •
